Everything you need to know about the Meatpacking District in New York
And what about the food scene?
For something truly exceptional, book a table at Saishin, the Gansevoort Hotel's Omakase restaurant. Its rooftop location is unreal, including a terrace with views of the Empire State and One World Trade Centre, and the food is as spectacular as the setting.
Where should I stay?
Gansevoort Hotel, no question. It's in the heart of the action, steps from Sephora, RH, Whitney Museum and the High Line, and the moment you step through the door there's a laidback-yet-glamorous vibe, which is exactly how a trip to New York should make you feel.
Still gleaming from a recent refurb, there's a Banksy worth squillions in reception and really impressive eating/meeting/drinking options spread across the ground floor in the shape of The Chester, an American-style brasserie that's super popular with locals (particularly the outside terrace which always appeared packed) and C+C (Coffee + Cocktails), where I enjoyed a healthy berries, granola and yogurt breakfast (and people-watching), though if you want to let your hair down happy hour's 5-7pm.
I stayed in room 1011, a stylish cocoon of classy blue, white and wood with designer touches. I loved the luxe linen, water in cartons, soft blue robes, Grown Alchemist toiletries and beautiful window seat where I sat and watched the city below coming alive early evening. This room is also where I discovered I love electric blinds and the thrill of pressing a button in bed to make them slowly and theatrically rise to reveal a spellbinding sunrise view of Manhattan and the river beyond.
Health and fitness-wise there are lots of advantages to staying here, including a gym with everything you could need to keep up your routine, including Peloton bikes, Lululemon Studio Mirror, free weights, treadmills, ellipticals and stair steppers. Also, if you have a few too many Made in Manhattan cocktails (Bacardi, Cointreau, pineapple juice, olive brine) at C+C, you can hit the new detoxifying infrared sauna the next day and sweat your sins away.
