The Gansevoort Hotel’s New Coffee + Cocktails Brings Euro Pavement Cafe Chic to NYC’s Meatpacking District
But the good people at the Gansevoort Meatpacking NYC hotel have decisively stepped in, with a cool new epicurean venue that brings a bit of what we love most about the classic pavement cafes of France and Italy to its namesake neighborhood. Indeed, the pithily named Coffee + Cocktails has just opened off the lobby and spilling out onto the sidewalk, where the cobblestoned streets of Gotham’s most visually atmospheric destination always remind us a bit of Paris’ Marais or Rome’s Tridente.
Much like those European cafes, the food menu is concise and unfussy, meant to casually accompany an hour or two of lazy daytime people watching. To wit, multigrain avocado toast and build-your-own-omelets for breakfast, then stepping up to dishes like roasted chicken salad with french beans and dijon aioli, classic chicken Milanese or pappardelle with ricotta pesto. Fruit tarts and creme brulee take care of the sweet toothers.
But this is very much a place to carry on with one of our other fave European habits, which is tippling the afternoon away, especially on a weekday when we should be working. And be assured, C + C impressively lives up to one half of its name, with a cocktail to suit every mood and inclination. To name a few, the Cafe Negroni (Hendrick’s gin, Campari in coffee, Antico Formula Carpano, burnt lemon zest), the Subtle Hint (Hennessy VSOP, liquorice bitters, lemon juice, ginger beer, garnished with citrus flicks), the Once in a Lifetime (Illegal Mezcal, Cynar, Noilly Prat Rouge, espresso-infused syrup, burnt grapefruit oils), and the eponymous C + C Martini (Woodinville bourbon, white chocolate syrup, coffee liqueur, fresh coffee, garnished with chocolate coffee beans, lemon oils), which is about as decadent a tipple as you’re likely to find anywhere.
Both the name and ingredients of the Wake Me Up (espresso-infused syrup, Woodford Reserve, coffee liqueur, tonic water, garnished with espresso beans) might even suggest a bit of pre-noon drinking, which we are also very much okay about.
If you’re planning to make it a late one, though, the hotel has also just opened the Japanese pop-up (through January) Saishin by Kissaki at the Gansevoort Rooftop, with 850 square feet of space for being all kinds of fabulous, including a 16 seat omakase bar. But we’re more likely to be found passing the time this summer at one of C + C’s stylish cafe chairs – we’ll be the ones sipping the double negronis.
